What Causes Emotional Trauma
Emotional trauma has been studied for many generations. The causes and the effects have been looked at particularly in men coming home from a war. This was called shell shock and was only thought of as happening to men in extreme circumstances. It was not till the 60’s that people finally realised it can happen to women as well, therefore shell shock became post traumatic emotional trauma.
It is not the event that causes the emotional trauma, but is in fact the way in which the event happens for that particular person. Many men came home from the war troubled and unhappy in the biggest extreme, they were in effect different people. Whereas others came home beaten and bruised, but fine.
Studies focused on brain scans have since found that the emotional trauma actually alters the brain in the way it functions and the structure it takes. This makes emotional trauma a real disabilitating disease. Since this finding, a positive has come from the studies. Now it is recognised it is possible to seek help in whatever forms there are available to you.
Some symptoms of emotional trauma can include the following, severe depression, panic attacks, obsessive behaviour and feelings of intense fear to name but a few. More often then not people suffering from emotional trauma will be sent to see a professional therapist, who will then hopefully be able to let the sufferer regain some much needed control in their life.
